Seven accused individuals of German far-left organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
