Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
