Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages down to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
