Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
